Daily Trivia - Pi Day
Today is 3-14-2023 (US date), 3.14 = π
And I going to talk about a small little PC in your pocket call Raspberry Pi.
The Raspberry Pi is a single-board computer based on Linux, designed by a team from the University of Cambridge, UK since 2008. It has been available to public for 11 years and has sold over 50 million units, creating a market worth more than $1 billion.
The Raspberry Pi was originally designed to inspire young people’s interest in programming, allowing them to obtain programmable hardware at a low cost, thereby increasing the number of applicants to the Computer Science Department at the University of Cambridge (which at the time was only 200 students per year). Therefore, the design of the Raspberry Pi has four key features:
1.- Programmable hardware 2.- It should be interesting and attractive to young people 3.- Affordable for most households 4.- Robustness, able to be thrown into a backpack
From the design of the first prototype in 2006 to the final product in 2011, the first generation of Raspberry Pi met these four requirements. It was priced at $25 and was the size of a credit card, but had full PC functionality, requiring only a keyboard and display to be used as a fully functional computer, such as processing spreadsheets, documents, playing games, and videos. It can also be used for advanced server purposes or industrial use by connecting it to the internet.
Prior to the Raspberry Pi, there were very little low-cost computers, Beagleboard back in 2008 retail at 125 USD, but the Raspberry Pi did it with just 25 USD, creating a new type of computing device and becoming a standard component for intelligent interfaces. Its adaptability, stability, and low price were quickly recognized by the industrial market, adding an option for the design of industrial control systems, such as electric vehicle charging, IoT, or factory machinery retrofits.
