While people always think facebook is the evil company who just want profit and your data, they are actually one of the key (if not most) important open source project owner especially in this mobile first, AI first era.

Most mobile app/web app you use is developed using React/React Native, that is a JavaScript library maintains by META.

The de facto Machines Learning Library for all platform (Mac/Nvidia/Intel etc) - PyTorch, is open source by Facebook AI research Lab (FAIR) since 2016.

While company like Google and OpenAI keep their LLM model closed source, META release LLaMA 2, together with the training method and free commercial license. Basically give birth to all the open source LLM model that can compete with Google/OpenAI model.

Is kinda ironic when a company call OpenAI is getting more and more protective about their project (the new 3.5-turbo is even cheaper now yay), and the so called evil company is the one who give most AI startup the knowledge for free and enable the open source community.
