Jin’s daily Trivia - The Internet Virtue Signaller
What is virtue signaling?
Virtue signaling refers to publicly expressing moral opinions or actions primarily to gain social approval rather than effect change.
Public display: Sharing views on social media, wearing cause-related apparel, or making symbolic gestures (e.g., changing profile pictures for trending causes). Moral proxy: Using opinions or behaviors as shortcuts to signal “goodness” (e.g., criticizing stealing art while owning a closet full of doujin). Motivation debate: Critics argue it prioritizes self-image over substance, while defenders claim even superficial support can raise awareness.
AI-generated images haven’t actually harmed Studio Ghibli. Their brand and works weren’t misused or confused with anything else. In fact, the trend just shows how influential Ghibli is worldwide. Right now, Ghibli has chosen not to comment on AI-generated images.
The real damage came from a fake warning letter pretending to be from Ghibli, accusing AI of copyright infringement and demanding a ban. This forgery hurt Ghibli’s reputation, trademarks, and decision-making rights.
To clear things up, Ghibli quickly announced through NHK that they never sent any warning letters and that the one spreading online is fake.
