Jin Daily AI Trivia: Bytedance (TikTok) AI IDE Trae – Still Sending Data Back Even With Telemetry Off?

ByteDance’s AI-powered coding tool Trae is making headlines—but not for the right reasons.

Developer segmentationf4u1t discovered that even after switching off the telemetry setting, Trae IDE kept quietly sending out data like system info, device IDs, file usage patterns, and even location details. In just 7 minutes, it made nearly 500 connections and uploaded around 26MB of data. Naturally, the dev community isn’t thrilled.

Turns out, Trae’s own telemetry system runs separately from the standard VS Code telemetry toggle. So even if you disable the default one, Trae keeps doing its thing—leading many to think telemetry was off, when it clearly wasn’t.

So… is it just poor UX design? Or is your code editor low-key phoning home to TikTok HQ?
