  • The very first Excel dropped on Mac, September 30, 1985. Windows didn’t get it until Excel 2.0, two years later.

  • Before Excel, Microsoft tried making a spreadsheet program called Multiplan. It flopped against Lotus 1-2-3, so they went back to the drawing board and created Excel.

  • Thanks to triskaidekaphobia (fear of the number 13), Microsoft skipped Excel 13 and jumped straight from 12 to 14.

  • Excel 97 had a hidden flight simulator. Other versions also hid secret games and Easter eggs.

  • Microsoft Excel even has its own World Championship (MEWC) — a real-life esports competition where top spreadsheet experts battle head-to-head in complex Excel challenges.
