Lately, there have been quite a few cases of cars with fancy touch or hidden door handles failing during accidents.

Out of curiosity, I went through the teardown video of the Xiaomi SU7’s door handle — and guess what? It uses two simple tactile micro switches, the same kind you’d find under your mouse buttons. That says a lot about the design choices.

Meanwhile, Tesla’s door handle uses a gear mechanism with a mechatronic sensor to detect door handle movement — far more reliable and much less prone to failure.
