Ever wonder why vibe-coded projects all look… suspiciously similar?

You can thank Adam Wathan, the creator of Tailwind CSS. And yes, he knows. His recent tweet:

“I’d like to formally apologize for making every button in Tailwind UI bg-indigo-500 five years ago, leading to every AI-generated UI on Earth also being indigo.”

Funny. Self-aware. And also tragic.

The real problem? Tailwind’s business model was selling polished UI components—exactly the kind of thing AI now generates instantly, for free, and in the same style.

Result: • Tailwind CSS usage is at an all-time high • Paid revenue is down ~80% • 75% of the engineering team was laid off • Management estimate: about six months of runway left

Or as they put it:

“75% of the people on our engineering team lost their jobs here yesterday because of the brutal impact AI has had on our business.”

AI didn’t kill Tailwind.

It just finished eating the part people used to pay for.
