Trivia of the Day: Understanding Battery Types

Have you ever wondered about the capacity of the battery you use on a daily basis? Perhaps you’ve considered buying battery adapters that can replace expensive C/D batteries with cheaper and more readily available AA batteries? (not recommended)

Fortunately, dry cell battery technology has become quite advanced in recent years, so opting for a less expensive brand doesn’t necessarily mean sacrificing quality. As long as you choose the appropriate type of battery (Zinc-Carbon, Alkaline, or Lithium), you should be good to go.

Zinc-Carbon batteries are the most economical option and are typically labeled as “heavy-duty.” They are best suited for low-power appliances such as TV remotes and clocks. When placed in these types of devices, they can last for years without leaking.

Alkaline batteries are the most common type available and are often labeled as such, with silver or gold shells. They are ideal for high-power devices like RC toy cars, delivering more power and lasting up to six times longer than Zinc-Carbon batteries. However, they can corrode and leak if left unused in a device.

Non-rechargeable Lithium batteries are also available and are marketed as a high-end option with a long shelf life and leak-proof design. They can provide even more power than Alkaline batteries and can last up to six times longer. Non-rechargeable Lithium batteries carry 1.5V, while rechargeable types are typically around 3.7V.

Hopefully, this information has taught you something new today!
