Daily Trivia: The Birth of YouTube 🎥 and Dating site

Did you know that the original idea behind YouTube was inspired by a dating site called HOTorNOT .com?

Back in the early days, YouTube co-founders Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim envisioned YouTube as a video version of HOTorNOT, where users could upload videos and rate them. HOTorNOT was a groundbreaking site for its time, allowing users to upload photos to be rated on a scale from 1 to 10.

Jawed Karim was particularly impressed with HOTorNOT because it was the first platform where user-generated content (UGC) was the star, a concept that paved the way for YouTube’s massive success. Prior to this, websites were primarily controlled by their owners who provided all the content.

Fun fact: If you think about it, HOTorNOT was kind of like an early version of Tinder, but with a brutal rating system. Imagine swiping left or right on a 1 to 10 scale! 😆❤️
