Jin Daily News Trivia - Trump New Tariffs on 12 Countries Starting August 1

Japan and South Korea—two of the United States’ closest allies—will now face a blanket 25% tariff on their exports to the U.S. In letters to their leaders, Trump stated that the trade relationships have been “far from reciprocal.”

As for Malaysia, the tariff rate has been set at 25%, up from the 24% initially proposed in April. Pffft… and to think our local media and so-called “experts” were confidently saying it would be around 10%. (Never trust “experts”, haha.)

Meanwhile, a trade agreement has been reached with Vietnam. It will now face a 20% tariff—down from the previously threatened 46%. However, any goods transshipped through Vietnam from countries like China will be slapped with a higher 40% tariff.

At this point, it honestly makes more sense to invest in Vietnam (lower cost of living too) than in Malaysia or most other ASEAN countries. Today, there’s an ASEAN meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Mark Rubio. I’m curious to see if Anwar will say anything to the Vietnamese leader (who once promised ASEAN would face tariffs together) or to Rubio himself.
