Daily Jin Tech Trivia: GlobalFoundries Acquires MIPS
GlobalFoundries — the chip fab that was once owned by AMD — has just acquired MIPS, a company that used to be the go-to alternative after ARM and x86.
In recent years, MIPS has pivoted towards the RISC-V architecture. MIPS’ recent contributions to RISC-V include the Atlas processor suite, which is optimized for edge AI processing.
This acquisition means RISC-V now has a fully integrated solution provider. GlobalFoundries is evolving from a pure-play semiconductor foundry into a supplier capable of offering end-to-end solutions — including IP, software, and manufacturing.
This move could fundamentally shift GlobalFoundries’ position in the market, potentially putting it in direct competition with some of its existing foundry customers who design their own chips. I’m not entirely sure this is a wise move, especially considering the number of RISC-V competitors emerging — particularly in China.
I hope you learn something new today!! see ya!!
