Jin Daily AI Trivia – ChatGPT Translate vs. TranslateGemma
Today, OpenAI dropped ChatGPT Translate, and Google dropped TranslateGemma. Both are trying to kill the old habit of copy–pasting text into a separate translator.
ChatGPT Translate
- Chat-style translation with dual columns and automatic language detection.
- Focuses on tone and context, so translation feels like part of an ongoing conversation, not a standalone tool.
TranslateGemma
- A new open-source translation model family based on Gemma 3, supporting 55 languages including Chinese, English, Spanish, and Hindi.
- Available in 4B / 12B / 27B sizes. The 12B model even outperforms Gemma 3 27B on WMT24++, using less than half the parameters.
- 4B targets mobile and on-device use, 12B fits laptops or local servers, and 27B is designed for cloud GPUs (think a single H100).
TL;DR
- ChatGPT Translate = a polished, user-friendly front end for everyday users.
- TranslateGemma = a powerful backend for people who want to run or host their own translation models.
