Jin Daily Mac Trivia: 5 Things You Didn’t Know About “MacBook Rahmah”

  1. The “Rahmah” Pricing is Real

The MacBook Neo launched at an incredibly aggressive $599 USD (and just $499 for education). But the real shocker is the localized pricing in Malaysia: it starts at just MYR 2,499 (or MYR 2,099 with the education discount). To put that into perspective, this full-fledged laptop is significantly cheaper than the baseline iPhone 17e, which sits at MYR 2,999! (USD 599)

  1. Only Two Configurations

Base Model (MYR 2,099): 256GB of storage and no Touch ID. Upgraded Model (MYR 2,499): 512GB of storage and includes Touch ID.

The 512GB version is arguably the best deal in Apple’s current lineup. If you want 512GB on the next tier up—the MacBook Air M5—you will be paying MYR 4,699. That is exactly a MYR 2,200 or 50% off premium for a device with a similar screen size and weight.

  1. Strategic Hardware Compromises

To hit this price point, Apple made some notable hardware cuts. The keyboard is not backlit, and the trackpad is a traditional mechanical clicking pad rather than the glass haptic force-touch trackpad.

Port speeds are also split: while you get two USB-C ports, one runs at 10Gbps (USB 3), while the other is capped at 480Mbps (USB 2). The battery is also noticeably smaller than the Air (36.5 Wh vs. 53.8 Wh).

However, it is not all compromises! You still get Apple’s premium aluminum unibody design, a notch-less 13-inch screen with same 500 nits of brightness, and—unlike the pricier iPhone 17e—it actually comes with a 20W charger in the box.

  1. Powered by the A18 Pro

Instead of an M-series chip, the Neo uses the A18 Pro. Because this chip shares the same foundation as the M4 (just scaled down with fewer cores), its real-world laptop performance feels very close to an M1 or M2 MacBook Air.

For everyday usage, its 60GB/s memory bandwidth performs similarly to standard laptop DDR5 memory—something you rarely see in a laptop at the 2K price point. Plus, it is fully equipped with modern connectivity, supporting both Wi-Fi 6E (6GHz) and Bluetooth 6.

  1. Display and Peripheral Support

Just like the M1, M2, and M3 MacBook Airs, the MacBook Neo supports only one external monitor at up to 4K 60Hz. If you want native support for multiple external displays with the laptop lid open, you still need to step up to the M4 or M5 MacBook Air.

Finally, the webcam is capped at standard 1080p (compared to the 12MP Center Stage cameras on the Air), and the mic and speaker arrays are slightly scaled back.
