Google just announced it’s hiring the CEO of Windsurf — along with several key team members. (Not an acquisition, just a talent raid.)

Meanwhile, OpenAI has lost nearly half of its top talent in just a few weeks. The situation got worse after a disagreement with Microsoft over Windsurf’s IP. As a result, Microsoft has reportedly paused future funding — including SoftBank’s $40B investment, which is now also on hold.

With no clear path to acquiring Windsurf and cash flow tightening, OpenAI is in a tough spot. Then out of nowhere, Google swoops in and snatches the Windsurf talent.

Not a great look for OpenAI — and all this comes just days after Elon dropped Grok-4, which topped the latest AI benchmarks.
