Jin’s Daily AI Trivia: Qwen WebSailor-3B — The Best Open-Source Deep Research Agent You Can Self-Deploy

If you’ve deployed a lot of LLM-based chatbots, you probably know that most open-source models really struggle with deep research tasks.

Why is that?

Most AIs are great at finding answers when the information is obvious — for example, when the correct result appears in the first web search or the topic is highly related. (e.g., “Who are the OpenAI CEO alumni and what companies did they found?”)

But when the information is buried deep online or only loosely related, most models can’t dig it out effectively.

That’s where Alibaba’s Qwen WebSailor comes in. It’s trained on what’s called Level-3 tasks — scenarios full of informational “fog” (train using their SailorFog-QA benchmark), where the agent must reason its own path using limited, scattered data.

Just yesterday, they released the WebSailor-3B model on Hugging Face. This might be the first truly usable deep search agent you can run locally, unlike their earlier 32B/72B models (which already beat some closed-source agents in deep research).
